Short Interviews

There are oral boards where they only ask you a few questions. Then they ask if you have anything to add or would you like to give a closing statement. You’re missing out here by not taking advantage of a great opportunity to deliver those answers you have not already used, i.e., Why do you want to be a firefighter? What have you done to prepare for the position? Why do you want to work for this department or agency?

This is like going to Broadway to be in a play. You’re playing the part of a firefighter. When they ask you if you want to add anything, it’s ShowTime! The bright lights are coming on. The curtain is going up for a 25-year career.

A candidate asked this question: I had an interview with a city fire department. I was scheduled for a half an hour interview with the board, they presented themselves and I shook their hands firmly with confidence. They asked me 6 questions. They were worded a little bit different from what I was studying in your tapes but the same point! I answered them, but I had little stumbles here and there. What worried me was that when I came out of the room there where couple of their city firefighters with stunned faces and I was wondering why? I looked at my watched and saw that I was only in there for about ten to fifteen minutes . . . I’m freaking out here Bob! Are short interviews good or bad? Thanks.

It is not unusual for candidates to stumble a few words in their oral board. The raters expect it.

If you had personalized answers for the base line of possible oral questions, practiced faithfully with a tape recorder to hear what the oral board was going to hear out of your mouth, delivered “Nugget” answers, it is not uncommon to get out of an oral board quickly with just 6 questions.

And, don’t psych yourself out by thinking their firefighters were stunned.  You probably nailed it.

Don’t worry until its time to worry. It’s not time to worry yet!

The above candidate indeed nailed it in his short interview and got his badge!

Absolutely nothing counts 'til you have the badge. Nothing!
