No PreamblesOur constitution has a preamble. It sets the tone for the body of law that follows, much like a prelude for a book helps set the scene for the story that follows. A lot of the people I work with in private coaching sessions either knowing or unknowingly do the same thing. Don’t let yourself be one of them. When asked the question;” Why do you want to be a firefighter?” I’ve had people talk for 30 seconds before they actually begin to answer the question. I’ll hear “ I’m glad you asked me that”, or “ That’s a very good question, and I’d love to tell you about my desire to be a firefighter”. These people are taking time away from answering the question, and risk losing the attention of the panel. Usually it’s not just one question, they do it with every one of them. It’s as if they are talking while they think of what they want to say. You never want to have your mouth in drive, while you brain is in neutral. The best thing to do is just answer the question. It’s OK to pause a moment if needed to gather your thoughts. If you need to you could include part of the question in your answer. Like, “The reason I want to be a firefighter is …”. But, nothing more, keep it simple. NRTC@SONIC.NET
