Hi: I’m 23 years old and I have a big problem. Back

When I was a senior in high school I got a differed probation for a felony agg assault and got off probation in 1 year. Since then I have moved to another town started going to college and now I am a state certified firefighter and I just got my EMT-Intermediate. Now when I go and talk to the human resource lady for the city she basically tells me that I couldn't even clean the city streets with my record. I took my intermediate course in the next town over and the EMS director worked with me on some of my clinical hours on the ambulance, long story short he got to get to know me and see me work and not just the me that’s black and white on paper and he offered me a job working for EMS in that town. That says a lot about what kind of guy I am so how can I get a fire department to see the real me and not just another guy with a record? I mean I know I was a knuckle head in high school but I have grown up I have not even had a speeding ticket since then I am not a screw up. I have paid my dues and gone to school and earned all my certificates man I am hurting and need some help.

That's the uphill problem you might not be able to solve. Felony Agg Assault is serious. Some states won't hire you with a felony because it's a sworn position. Where this will really come into play is in the background and psych interview it you ever get that far. I would like to encourage you more but it will be difficult if not impossible.

Too often I receive calls from candidates who ask like the one above, “What do I do now” after they have spend time, money, education and put their lives on hold for years only to be taken out at one of the hiring stations. Sad.

For some they are clouded and domed before they ever take their first step because of something in their past, job history, criminal record, credit, driving record or domestic violence. They still believe though that they have a shot. Then, they don't face it until it's staring them in the face at the next step in the hiring process.

Maybe there’s something you can do, someone you can talk to convince them you’re the guy they need; Just give me a chance to prove myself.

You won’t even get that far in the hiring process if you don’t learn how to take an interview. Because, you will never place high enough on the list to be considered for a shot at a badge. Many feel just by packing on the credentials will ensure they will get a job. It’s learning how to take that oral board interview like the following candidate that can make the difference:
