Quick Tip

==========================================

A Few Questions:

1.  My "what have you done to prepare for this job" answer takes 4-5 min.  Do you think that is too long?

Reply: No. This is going to be your longest answer.

2.  I am having trouble with finding a good weakness.  One I came up with was that I am not always as patient as I should be with people at work.  I follow it up with explaining why and how I have turned that around.  However, in one of your tapes, you said not to use not being patient as a weakness.  Do you think in this instance it would be alright since I am talking specifically about a work situation?  (I can't use bad speller, I am really good at spelling...)

Reply: Absolutely not.  You can't use this answer because they will feel they can't place you in a station and drive everyone nuts.  Pick something more simple.

3. Here is my "why do you want to be a firefighter" answer.  Please let me know if you think it is a clone answer.  I don't believe it is, but I want to double check.

I’d like to tell you that I’ve dreamed of being a firefighter since I was a little kid; that my Dad was one or that after seeing a firefighter save a life I immediately wanted to be one.  But in fact, I have just recently begun dreaming of becoming a firefighter.  I was sitting in my living room one day thinking about my life, future and current job and it just popped into my mind out of nowhere.  I went and told my wife of my plans to which she was surprised, but very supportive and just as excited as me.  I recognized that I didn’t have any idea where to start, so I called someone I knew who works in the fire industry.  I called him the same day and he gave me a few pointers to get me started.  The more I learned, the more I realized that this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for.  Not just a job, but a career that actually matters;  a career in which I can make a positive impact in other people’s lives; and a career that will give me an opportunity to really use my talents and abilities fully.  Ever since that first day I have been pursuing firefighting passionately and doing all that I can to become a city of Kent firefighter.

Reply: Did you practice this with a recorder before you sent it to me?  Yes, there is too much clone stuff.  You can use it but you have to hook them in with a better story first.

Try this: There was a point in your pursuit during a class, ride along or a life experience where your mind went click; that’s it.  This is what I want to do in life. My life is not going to be the same until I get that badge.

When did this happen?  That’s your story that your can marry off with your other information.

Can't use your dad as a firefighter.

Rob was doing a coaching session with a LA City candidate. On his visit to several LA City fire stations, they told him to make sure he mentioned that his two cousins work for LA City! Yea, everyone becomes and expert once they’re hired.  I believe that would be instant suicide.

Question: My father is a thirty-year veteran of the fire department. My grand father was a twenty-six year veteran of the police department. Would it be a good idea to incorporate that information into an answer on the oral exam? Thanks Rod

It’s tricky. It’s a balancing act. It could hurt you. Too many candidates club the oral board over the head with a dad or other relative who is or has been a firefighter. The panel can interpret this as asking for more points.

With my son Rob we used it this way: I’ve wanted to be a firefighter most of my life because members of my family have been firefighters. He never said who. If they wanted to know they would ask. They only asked once. That department hired him.

We approved the way another candidate used his signature story:

When I was 10 years old, my father as a captain on the Boston Fire Department took me to work with him. That afternoon we got a call. We rolled out with a lot of other rigs to an apartment fire. I saw my dad get off the rig, direct people for rescue and extinguish the fire. I knew right then that I would not be satisfied until I achieved my badge. — Steve

Who else could tell Steve’s story? No one. He was there. After we worked on this story in private coaching, Steve was able to recreate the excitement, emotion, enthusiasm, and color of the actual event. You were on the rig with Steve; you saw the flames, and hairs on the back of your neck start standing up. Again, firefighters love firefighter stories. We do. If you can tell the oral board a signature story from your life experience that relates to the answer, it can catapult you past the “Clone” candidates.
