I believe in taking every test you can get to. Beg, borrow, gravel and do what ever it takes to get to as many tests as possible. The more tests you take, the better you are in taking that test you really want to nail.
Cost? Spare me this part. This is an investment in a career position that pays 60 grand plus a year with unbelievable benefits way into retirement.
Get serious. In case you haven't noticed, there is an army out there trying to get this job. You need every angle to make it happen for you. Firehire, CPS what ever. Just get up, suit up and go do it. It will pay off biggggg in the future. You waste more time and money having beer and pizza with your friends.
Didn't you notice? Less people are taking the CPS test this time. There are fewer locations this time. I was at the CPS Vallejo test today. Only about 75 were testing. Better odds? You bet. Many of our candidates were hired off last year's test. Ask them if it was worth it.
I don't care for the CPS test. Few do. I can't believe cities would contract with an agency that produces a test that has little relevance with the needs of the fire service. Their approach is fantasy land. Fire administrations say their hands are tied because personnel runs the test until the oral boards. This is academia at work. How these folks at CPS can scam agencies into believing they are qualified to produce a good test and charge for it is beyond me.
It is my understanding that although CPS is not a government agency, they are supported by our tax money. The written psychological questions can eliminate candidates early on in the process. The red-hot candidates, who have been the back bone of the fire service, are taken out by these purposeless questions. If you answer those questions as you normally would, you fail that section. Go figure.
CPS has even entered the realm of oral board training including suggested questions. I've been on some of these oral boards. Talk about a dog and pony show. The candidates and raters come away frustrated. Is CPS going away? Probably not.
After venting this, I still encourage you to take the CPS and any other test you can get to. It could be your day. Your ticket in.
